ABOUT the Project Manager Position

a leadership image of a hand untying a complicated knot. taking a complicated problem and solving it

The Role of Project Managers at BG Custom Homes

At BG Custom Homes, we have a PM Team. Our Project Managers are not project witnesses—they’re leaders. A PM here is expected to take charge, keep projects safe, on-budget, and on-schedule, and deliver a client experience as strong as the homes we build.

The primary outcomes and macro objectives of the role are very clear:

  1. Happy clients who are eager to write excellent reviews.
  2. Happy employees and trades who are satisfied with their work and treated with respect.
  3. Projects that are 100% complete — not just “substantially finished.”
  4. Exceptional, photo-worthy work that reflects our standards.
  5. Projects delivered on time, within budget, and according to schedule.

Every decision, action, and responsibility of a Project Manager is tied back to these five core objectives.

What We Expect From Our Project Managers

Safety

Safety is a top priority at BG Custom Homes. We demand active participation in our safety program—not only is it company policy, it is the law. This includes proactive, routine participation in safety initiatives and injecting safety requirements into discussions with our crew and subtrades. PMs are also responsible for documenting safety leadership in SiteDocs to ensure compliance and accountability.

Quality Control

PMs are responsible for setting the bar for quality. The bare minimum acceptable construction tolerance is not an option. You’ll need to clearly articulate standards to staff and subtrades, schedule quality control checks before and after each milestone, and maintain active punch lists. Our goal is excellent work well above minimum acceptable standards.

Planning, Scheduling & Estimating

Being in control means planning ahead. PMs are responsible for sequencing, estimating, and maintaining the critical path, ensuring that scope, budget, and schedule stay in harmony.

Leadership vs. Witnessing

A PM at BG Custom Homes is a leader, not a project witness. That means taking ownership—driving progress, solving problems, and keeping the team aligned and accountable.

People Skills & Client Experience

Technical ability matters, but people skills matter just as much. PMs set the tone on site, with trades, and with clients. Applicants should be friendly, professional, and upbeat. Building trust, resolving issues, and delivering an excellent client experience are part of the role.

Representing the Company & the “Why”

PMs represent the best interests of the company and the client. This means upholding good business practice and good building practice, and making sure the “why” is always in check. At the end of the day, PMs are responsible for improving the quality of life of our clients through their work.

Communication & Coordination

PMs are the primary point of contact for clients on active projects. Routine meetings, regular check-ins, and key walkthroughs must be scheduled. PMs must also coordinate with trade partners, our design team, engineering dept and crew to keep responsibilities clear and progress steady.

Site Presence

True control requires being present. PMs aren’t expected to be on-site every day, but 1–3 visits per week are the standard for staying ahead of issues, supporting crews, and ensuring quality and safety are upheld.

Technology & Documentation

PMs are expected to use COConstruct effectively to update schedules, track budgets, document changes, upload photos, and maintain transparent project records. This is a critical part of the role.

Working With Lead Carpenters

We subscribe to the Lead Carpenter format, where the LC acts as a site superintendent and strategically shares site management responsibilities with the PM. The PM provides leadership, planning, and client communication, while the LC drives daily execution on site—ensuring quality, safety, and progress are upheld.

A strong working relationship between PM and LC is essential, and both roles must support each other in accordance with our LC/PM Success Guide. When this balance works, projects flow smoothly: decisions are made faster, site conditions are better managed, and crews and trade partners have the leadership they need on the ground every day.

Opportunities at BG Custom Homes

We are a growing company, and we’re always looking for talented experienced Project Managers who want to raise the bar with us. While we hire for full-time leadership roles, we are also open to project-based PM opportunities for the right candidates and we do work throughout Nova Scotia.

If custom residential project management is in your wheelhouse, we encourage you to submit a resume. The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and a firm belief that with careful, effective planning, projects are far better off. “Run and gun” style management isn’t what we do here—our work depends on foresight, structure, and discipline.

Working at BG Custom Homes means being part of a team that values craftsmanship, professionalism, and client care. Our PMs are trusted leaders who play a direct role in shaping the quality of life for our clients by delivering projects that are safe, beautiful, and built above standard.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to start a conversation and get you know you. Please submit your resume and cover letter, along with your response to our skills-testing question, through our online application process.

  • Take day-to-day ownership of where all company tools, equipment, trailers, vehicles, and inventory are
  • Maintain an organized inventory system for commonly used materials and supplies
  • Check tools and equipment back in, inspect for damage, and store properly when returning from sites
  • Identify missing, damaged, or unsafe tools/equipment and coordinate repair or replacement

3. Vehicle, Trailer & Maintenance Coordination

  • Safely operate ½-ton pickup trucks, tool trailers, and dump trailers
  • Be a very safe and responsible driver—defensive, courteous, and mindful that you represent the company on the road
  • Schedule and/or execute basic upkeep and maintenance on company vehicles and trailers (oil changes, tire checks, fluid checks, booking service, etc.)

  • Participate in the company’s quality and safety program
  • Assist with site and equipment inspections as required
  • Report hazards, safety concerns, and quality issues promptly

7. General Problem Solving & Support

  • Act as a “jack of all trades” support person, helping solve small day-to-day issues
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with suppliers, team members, and occasionally homeowners or neighbors
  • Support special tasks or errands that help keep projects on schedule such as changing flat tires.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Very safe and responsible driver (valid driver’s license in good standing required)
  • Confident operating pickup trucks and backing/maneuvering trailers (tool and dump trailers)
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Strong problem-solving ability and comfort working in a fast-moving environment
  • Basic carpentry skills and familiarity with construction terminology
  • Comfortable performing small finishing and close-out tasks (mounting accessories, patching, touch-ups)
  • Strong communication skills; able to coordinate with Project Managers, Lead Carpenters, and office staff
  • Knowledge of construction tools, materials, and hardware, or willingness to learn quickly
  • Solid commitment to safety, quality, and housekeeping

Personal Fit

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is reliable, trustworthy, punctual, and dependable under pressure
  • Enjoys a mix of driving, physical work, and hands-on tasks
  • Takes pride in a clean, organized shop, vehicles, and jobsites
  • Has a support mindset—you know your work makes the whole team more effective
  • Can adapt as priorities change throughout the day
